Post-transcriptional processes.

The nine reviews on post-transcriptional processes that follow bring this year’s series of reports on the cell biology field to a fitting close. In an arena so broad that a previous editor was impelled to remark that it might include practically everything that cells do, any combination of choices is bound to seem eclectic. What distinguishes the present set of reviews is that they cover topics that are, we believe, of general interest and that they do so in a lively and timely fashion. In some, the character of timeliness is imparted by the sheer novelty of the subject (who a few years ago would have dared invoke RNA editing or ribosome jumping to explain an odd result?). Other topics are more mature ones, in which recent advances have f&d in uncharted blanks on the map or have opened up fresh fields. Regardless of the history and an tecedents of their subject matter, all of the contributors have dealt with their reviews in a scholarly and enlightening fashion, and we thank them for their efforts.
